Let's talk about something that I don't think has gotten nearly enough publicity this fall. That's the flu virus. When is the last time you heard anything in the news about the flu? Everybody's worried about spreading COVID-19. But I'm here to remind everybody about the importance of flu education. What are some ways that we can prevent the flu virus? Number one is to wash your hands guys. I know it seems like a very basic thing, but how many of you walk through your kitchen every day or through your office break room and don't stop to wash your hands? God forbid, I know that there's people out there who even don't wash their hands after they go the bathroom. I know, it's gross, but it's something that we really need to start doing. I know, I know, we don't need to get off onto that subject. But washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap can help stop both the COVID-19 virus and the influenza viruses. So washing your hands is super important.
Another way to stop or prevent yourself from getting the flu virus or by spreading it to other people is by getting the flu vaccination each year. Every year the CDC releases a vaccination for the most common strains of the influenza virus. Getting the flu vaccination if you are pregnant, over the age of 65, or less than six months old, can make a huge difference and prevention and stopping the spread. Another way that we can be proactive in stopping the influenza virus is simply by covering our mouths when we cough.
I know it may seem simple, but I'm just sharing some rules that have been proven to help with success. I want to make sure that you understand that if you are on a group health policy, or on an affordable care act, qualified policy that the influenza shot is covered under your health insurance. All you have to do is go to a pharmacy, a grocery store, or your local doctor or practitioners office, and they can perform the flu vaccination at little to no cost to you.
